How is it possible to spend so much time at a place, yet miss so many beautiful aspects of it?

It's no secret that I adore Lake Merritt in Oakland.  In fact, it's kind of a perfect place.  A quiet little lake tucked away in the heart of a big city.  It's sunshine and water and greenery and cacti (*swoon* cacti) surrounded by skyscrapers and city noise and murals.  It's everything I love rolled into one, so any time I have the opportunity to go there, I almost always will say yes.

The other day, on a bright, sunny break from all the rain, I ventured out there with my darling friend Jessica, and discovered a new area of the lake I had never seen, and needless to say, I'm obsessed.  It's full of bonsais, cacti, and enough palm trees to make you think you're in Hawaii.  It's beyond stunning, and I can't wait to go venture back there in the summer.

Ever since moving to the Bay Area, I continue to surprise myself with how much of a nature lover I'm becoming.  Of course, I'll always be a city girl at heart, but I've become so fond of just being surrounded by trees and plants and nature. It's a great thing I live in an area with an abundance of both.  I've found that both call to me at different times, and in turn, they help drive my art.  Sometimes, a project calls for a busy city sidewalk. And others, there's nothing more inspiring than sky-high cacti.   It just depends on what calls to me in the moment.

What calls you, nature or the city?
