Music Reccs- The Road to Rock
Today I wanted to shake things up a bit (shocker) and write about something totally different from fashion: music! As some of you may know, music is a huuuuuuuge part of my life. Since I was little I've always been super passionate about music. Not necessarily playing it (I admittedly don't know how to play an instrument) but listening to it. In high school, I practically lived at my local concert venue (for you NorCal natives, that was Ace of Spades in Sacramento) and went to concerts almost every weekend- sometimes, twice a weekend. My friends and I were always open to getting down and dirty in the mosh pit of punk and metal shows, and I have my fair share of survival stories from these hardcore pits.
Although I no longer have the time to go to shows every weekend, I still try to go as often as I can (though I've moved on from Ace to 924 Gilman, now) to check out new bands and get some pent-up energy out. And with that, I still find myself scoping out new bands all the time, and building up my music repotoire through Spotify (which you can follow me on here) Pandora, and, surprisingly, Instagram. So, I've decided to share some of the bands and songs I've been loving lately. Some of them are oldies you'll find in your grandpa's record collection, and others are new gems who are still waiting for their break. I highly encourage you to check out the playlist below, give it a listen, and let me know which band and/or songs are your favorites in the comments below.
A Few of the Bands Featured:
(Since there's a ton of different bands and artists featured on the playlist, I couldn't possibly write a bio about all of them. So, I opted for just a few of my favorites, although I really love all of them.)
If you've peeped my Instagram stories in recent weeks, you've seen me talk a lot about Sad Vegan. Hailing from Danville, CA (right here in the East Bay!) they are an incredibly dynamic, energetic band. I'd never heard of them until I saw them play 924 Gilman a few weeks ago, and they absolutely blew it out of the water. Their vocalist, Sydney, is so strong, so powerful, and man, do they put on a hell of a show. They're super small and only putting on Bay Area shows as of right now, but if you're in the area, I highly recommend checking them out! They're lively, fun, and a great way to hear some killer local music.
The Rolling Stones
A band that I've gotten into waaaaaay later than everyone around me, I've recently found a new love for the Rolling Stones. One of my best friends is a huge Stones fan, and is always talking about them, so I asked her to make me a playlist of her favorite songs so I could check them out. Needless to say, I'm in love, and can't believe I slept on them for so long. I absolutely love classic rock, and the British Invasion, so it was a surprise to everyone that I hopped on the bandwagon so late. But, better late than never, right? I know some of you may be thinking "My grandpa listens to them!" But seriously, they're cool. They'll never go out of style. No matter how old Mick Jagger is, he will always be a heartthrob (just sayin'). Seriously, go give them a listen, because this right here is real music.
An Oakland girl, Kehlani represents the Bay Area in the best way. Now I'm normally not a fan of R&B, in fact, I really don't listen to it at all, but I happen to really love Kehlani's music. I decided to check her out after seeing her billboard all over Oakland (the town is really hyped over her) and immediately fell in love with her music. Her newest album, "SweetSexySavage", is one of the very few albums that I can listen to all the way through without skipping any songs. Seriously, it's that good, and I'm not ashamed to say that I sing along to it in my car almost every day. Kehlani's music is so outside my normal taste, but I'm telling you, give it a chance, and you'll love it.
Did you find a new favorite song / artist / band? Let me know in the comments below! I had so much fun writing this post, I think i'll have to do another one again soon. :)
