I'm such a hypocrite.
Well, sort of. Let me explain.
A few months back, I shot an ad campaign for GIG carshare, a ride share service developed by AAA (crazy, right?) Anyway, the entire shoot was a bunch of LA natives trying to recreate an "Oakland Vibe" (whatever that means). And, for the shoot, they dressed me in white pants, which I thought was absolutely beyond weird, considering I'd never seen anyone in Oakland wear white pants. I was so confused the entire shoot, and kept thinking how "un-autnetic" it was that they were having us wear white pants to shoot in "Oakland" (really, inside a studio in San Francisco, but the green screens showed Oakland). Yet, here I am, wearing white shorts, in Oakland.
Let me be completely transparent though: I wore these shorts purely for the shoot, and in any other situation, I would not wear (nor recommend wearing) white shorts in either Oakland or San Francisco. As much as I love these cities, they're way too grimy for white shorts, and these shorts were black by the time this shoot was done. Let's just say: there's a reason almost everyone out here wears all-black. A very, very, very good reason.
So if you're planning on visiting California, save your white shorts for LA. Rodeo Drive and Laguna Beach are the perfect places for your delicate dandies. And if you're headed to The Town? Well, be like the locals and stick to all black. You'll thank me later.
